About Dumfries and Galloway

Dumfries is a beautiful and historic town, famous for its association with Robert Burns and JM Barrie, creator of Peter Pan. The River Nith flows through the heart of the town, on its course through the lush farmland of the region, which is a haven for anglers and an ideal base for fishing holidays.

The wider Dumfries and Galloway area covers a wide range of different landscapes across a broad stretch of South West Scotland, varying from the open expanse of agricultural land around the Solway to rolling green hills, to an unspoilt coastline, the deep forest of the Galloway Forest Park and the craggy peaks of the Southern Uplands that are perfect for exploring on foot or on a bike as part of a walking or cycling holiday.

The area takes in traditional market towns like Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart, many picturesque rural and fishing villages and the ferry port of Stranraer, gateway to Ireland.

There are castles, gardens, abbeys and museums to visit throughout the region, plenty of outdoor sports and activities and numerous excellent restaurants to make Dumfries and Galloway one of the best and yet underrated tourist regions in Scotland.
